Northern Ireland 18 Year Old or older Applicants

Before you Begin:

As a resident of Northern Ireland over 18 years of age, you have 6 steps to complete registration. We strongly suggest you print this page so that you can use it as a checklist for yourself to ensure you complete your steps of the process within 20 days, otherwise, your record will be deleted from our system and you will have to restart the process.

Step 1: Register your personal details online

Have the following to hand before you begin:

1. A valid email address unique to you

You will receive an acknowledgement email on completion of this step

Step 2: Complete your volunteer application online:

Within 2 working days of registering your personal details online, you will receive a Next Steps email from us. This email will provide you with the relevant links to allow you to:

1. Complete your online application

2. Access your Induction Training

Have the following to hand before you begin your online application:

Names and phone numbers of 2 referees who are over 18, who are not related to you and who can give an objective reference of your character and suitability. Please ask permission of those you wish to put forward as your referees.

If you are a qualified coach or official in any of the sports Special Olympics Ireland offers and wish those qualifications to be acknowledged, please have your qualification level, the National Governing Body who awarded the qualification and the date it was awarded. You can add up to 5 qualifications so please include your CPDs.

Step 3: Email or send us your photo:

This photo will be used on your membership card once you’ve completed all steps, showing you have clearance to volunteer.

The photo must be from the shoulders up with a clear background and must be of passport quality and dimensions. You must not be wearing sunglasses or a hat in the photo.

Please either email a digital image to us titled with your name and date of birth to or post it to us at our address. Please write your name and your date of birth clearly on the back of the photo.

Step 4: Complete Online Training:

Once you receive your Next Steps email from us click on the link to access Induction Training. Your registration application will not be progressed until you complete this training within the 20 day timeframe given from the start of the process.

Step 5: AccessNI Enhanced Disclosure

Under the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Groups (NI) Order 2007, Special Olympics Ireland is eligible to request an enhanced check through AccessNI as volunteer roles require working with children and adults who are vulnerable in unsupervised, regulated activity. An Enhanced Disclosure Certificate may contain details of any spent and unspent convictions as well as cautions and warnings. It may also have information from the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) if the applicant volunteer is prevented from working with children or vulnerable adults.

All applicants for volunteer roles with Special Olympics Ireland will be required to request an enhanced check through AccessNI. More specific information can be retrieved through NIDirect at

Please read the instructions to apply for an ENHANCED Disclosure through AccessNI using the Special Olympics Ireland PIN. Once you have applied for an enhanced disclosure, please write your Application Reference number in the space provided on the form.
AccessNI’s Privacy notice can be viewed when you click on the link contained in the ID VALIDATION FORM and AccessNI INVITATION to make your enhanced disclosure application.

Having a criminal record will not necessarily debar you from volunteering with Special Olympics Ireland

Step 6: ID Validation

To approve your enhanced disclosure application and submit to AccessNI, Special Olympics Ireland need to ensure that your Identification has first been validated. The before-mentioned ID VALIDATION FORM and AccessNI INVITATION needs to be taken to a the Special Olympics Ulster office in Belfast or by prior arrangement to your nearest club where your ID will be validated, signed and stamped to prove same. Please read the instructions carefully to ensure you bring relevant documents to prove your identity. You need to post this form to Special Olympics Ireland when it has been completed and stamped.

Have the following to hand before you begin your Enhanced Disclosure application:

1. Your address history for the last 5 years

2. Your National Insurance Number

3. Your passport number (if you have a passport)

4. Your Driving licence number (if you have a licence)

5. Your email address

Your enhanced disclosure application will not be approved and forwarded by SOI until the documentation above is received by us and your online training has been completed
