Before you begin:
Thank you for taking the time to apply to become a Special Olympics Ireland volunteer. As the safeguarding of Special Olympics athletes is paramount, all those applying to become volunteers, whether known to the organisation or not, are required to undertake a number of steps to facilitate Special Olympics Ireland to assess volunteer suitability and to comply with legislation and safeguarding best practice. For this reason, you are asked to take time to read all application instructions carefully and comply with same within the timeframe advised.
No individual can engage in volunteer activities within a club or at an event with Special Olympics Ireland until they have been fully registered.
Elements of the registration process will differ according to the jurisdiction (NI or ROI) you are located in and age category. The following gives a summary overview of the generic steps across the two jurisdictions.
More detailed instructions are given as you move through the process. Please read them carefully. Once you begin the registration process, you will have 20 days to complete it which includes returning any required documentation back to Special Olympics Ireland.

Complete your online volunteer application
All applications to volunteer with Special Olympics Ireland must be made online in two stages:
- 1. The first stage registers personal details
- 2. The second stage captures all other details related to your application
Make sure you have a valid email address unique to you.

Please check your email after you have registered your personal details online. You will receive a Next Steps email from us with a link to training and further instructions within 2 working days.

Police Background check
All applicants over 16 years old in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are required to go through the relevant vetting process according to jurisdiction. Please read instructions carefully as you move through the registration process

Access to a printer
At different stages throughout the registration process, you will be required to print certain documents to sign and return to Special Olympics Ireland. You may also be advised to print certain pages to retain for your own records.
